Dr. Laubach's Story
Dr.Frank C. Laubach was a Congregationalist minister. In the late 1920's, he left New York and led a missionary group to the island of Mindanao in the Philippines. He found they had a simple language that was unwritten. Realizing that a written language would help his teaching mission and benefit the tribe, Dr. Laubach set out to codify the language. He used the Roman alphabet and charts with pictures to teach sounds, symbols, and words. The project was a success and things went well. He had paid teachers until the 1930's when the Depression at home got worse and his church could no longer support his mission.
When he told the Chief they had to go back home, the Chief called his people together to give them the news. He told them they would no longer have the teachers. Then the Chief said, "I have learned to read. Others have learned to read." Drawing his sword, he said, "Each one will teach one- or die!" Dr. Laubach was so taken with that statement that he made it the motto of his new reading system: Each One, Teach One.
Over the next 20 years this system was developed and used in 103 countries for 313 languages. English was not tackled until the 1940's. In 1955 he incorporated Laubach Literacy International. Frank died in 1980 and his son Bob took over. JCALP joined Laubach Literacy Action in 1986. In 2000 the 2 major literacy programs in the US, Laubach Literacy and Literacy Volunteers of America, merged to form Proliteracy. JCALP is currently affiliated with Proliteracy. We purchase our books through their New Readers Press and ProLiteracy provides information and services to support our organization and tutors as well.
